Why Do We Find Sapphires Beautiful?

Why Do We Find Sapphires Beautiful?

Of course, the real question
isn't only about sapphires.

A flower is beautiful.
A night sky is beautiful.
A piece of music is beautiful.
A person's kindness
can feel beautiful too.

They are so different.
Why do they stir
something so similar in us?
How do we already know
what beauty is?

Twenty-four hundred years ago, Plato made a bold claim.
He said everything beautiful in this world
only shares in one same Beauty.
What truly exists
is not a flower.
Not a gemstone.
It is Beauty Itself.

Flowers wilt.
People grow old.
Even a gemstone can break.
But Beauty Itself
does not.
Every beautiful thing
only lets us glimpse it, briefly.

The first time I read this, I was stunned.
It answered a question
I had never really asked myself.
Why do such different things
awaken such similar feelings in us?
Why do we know, at a glance,
what beauty is?

Later, once I started making jewelry,
a different question slowly took shape.
Does a sapphire that truly moves us
only give us beauty?

Sometimes I hold a sapphire and do nothing at all.
I just watch it.
Light drifts slowly across its facets.
Time seems to slow down.
In that moment, I'm not thinking about its price.
Not thinking about how beautiful it is.
My mind simply goes quiet,
and everything around me fades back,
until all that's left is a wide, silent space.

Maybe that is where I want to keep talking with Plato.

Plato said gemstones let us glimpse Beauty Itself.
I'd rather believe
what truly opens
isn't “beauty” —
it's an inner space.

A place with no judgment.
No anxiety.
No rush.
Only this moment.
A place where you're not just looking at a gem —
you're looking through it,
and seeing yourself again.

Maybe that is what jewelry is really for.
Not just one more beautiful object in the world,
but a space to pause
inside a busy life.
A beam of light, turned inward.

A gemstone is more than beauty.
It opens a space.
A space to return to yourself.
